North Yorkshire police has identified more sites for safety camera vehicles in the Crambeck area of the A64, following four deaths on that stretch of the road earlier in the summer. I am pleased that these are now in operation along with a general increase in police vehicle presence since the accidents, which they say they are committed to maintain. I very much hope that this will give some reassurance to local people who are understandably worried about safety on the A64. I have been in touch with the police several times about using fixed camera sites. They say that a fixed site camera, whilst benefitting that site over a short distance, does have limitations. A mobile solution deployed on a route based approach not only influences speed, but it does so at a number of locations along the route. They also assure me that, in addition, it allows the enforcement of other offences which impact upon road safety, especially distraction type offences such as mobile phone use. It will also detect no seat belt, double white line offences, inappropriate motorcycle riding plus others. I will continue to work with Highways England, the police and the local community to try to find ways of making the A64 around Crambeck safer for everyone using it.
