The decision to close the Post Office in Helmsley and relocate to a site within the town’s Costcutter store has been met with deep disappointment by the local MP. Having spoken to all interested parties and many residents Kevin Hollinrake, MP for Thirsk and Malton, is frustrated by the announcement.
“I feel that other options discussed during the consultation, eg. relocating to the Co-op, have not been looked at thoroughly. It seems that all the potential solutions to the closure of the Post Office have not been investigated satisfactorily. I have not seen evidence of any clear site plan and despite hearing warm words on the issue I am concerned about the question of access for wheelchair users. I am against this decision and I will be writing to the Chief Executive of the Post Office to express my reservations. The services currently provided are of immense value to the community living in the town and surrounding villages and I do not think this is the right move. Many residents and businesses owners will be unhappy at the news and I intend to help in whatever way I can to find a better solution.”
