Check with BBC local Radio York for flood forecasts on 103.7 or 104.3 mhz
2. Prepare your home
Use specially made flood doors or purpose built flood boards which can be installed when flooding is imminent
Use specially designed covers to place over ventilation bricks
Put valuables on top shelves
Attach home entertainment , such as TVs to walls 1.5 metres above floor level.
Use rugs rather than fitted carpets.

3. Flood Insurance
Make sure your house insurance covers flooding and contents.
Shop around for the best deal.
4. Phone Numbers, important paperwork and medicines
Make sure they are kept in a safe accessible place so you can take them with you if you need to leave the house.
5. Know how to turn your gas, electricity and water off
Make sure you do this before flood water enters your home. Do not touch electricity switches if you are standing in water. Only turn them on again if they have been checked by a qualified technician.
6. Family and Pets
Move them upstairs or to a high place with a means of escape.
7. Food
Do not eat food that has been in contact with flood water.
8. Flood water
Do not let children play in flood water and try not to drive through flood water.
9. Drains
Do not try to unblock drains yourself.
10. Emergency Services
Keep listening to updates on local radio and cooperate at all times with emergency services and evacuate your home when they ask you to.
